County, Vera Institute of Justice, Partner on Jail Data Dashboard

On March 22, 2021, Hays County will unveil a new public-facing jail population dashboard, developed in partnership with the Vera Institute of Justice. Commissioner Lon Shell (Pct. 3) will present the dashboard at a virtual news conference at 9 a.m. (CDT) on Monday , featuring representatives of Vera as well as directly impacted community members, followed by a walk-through of the data and analysis presented in the dashboard for members of the news media and the public.

While local jails are one of the most ubiquitous facets of the justice system, the drivers and consequences of jail incarceration often receive inadequate attention. The Hays County Jail Dashboard will enable timely insight into the Hays County Jail population, furthering good governance, community oversight of the local justice system, and evidence-driven policy reforms.

The Dashboard was developed in partnership with the Vera Institute of Justice’s ‘In Our Backyards’ (IOB) initiative. The IOB team developed the innovative Jail Population Project to provide granular, real-time data about local jail populations.

Monday’s news conference will include a walk-through of the dashboard and the opportunity for a public question and answer session via Zoom.

Hays County COVID-19 Update March 22

Hays County Local Health Department (HCLHD) reports 36 new lab-confirmed cases along with nine (9) new hospitalizations and one (1) new hospital discharge since Friday’s report. There are 34 additional persons considered recovered. The total number of persons considered recovered is 16,255.

The current total of lab-confirmed cases for Hays County since the beginning of the pandemic is 16,913. Hays County has 423 active cases. In the past 21 days there have been 645 active cases. Hays County has had 781 total COVID-related hospitalizations and 14 people are currently hospitalized.

HCLHD officials urge everyone to continue following COVID-19 health and safety protocols, including frequent vigorous hand washing, social distancing, wearing face masks and avoiding in-person gatherings.

Hays County Seeks Public Input on Three Transportation Projects

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX — The County is hosting three separate Virtual Open Houses to share information and collect input from the community for the Hillside Terrace Improvements Project , the Windy Hill Road Project , and the Dripping Springs Southwest Connection Study (also known as the Improve 150 Project).

“Road safety continues to be a top priority for Hays County.” said Jerry Borcherding, Hays County Transportation Director. “The County is sharing information with the community and asking for input so we can continue to focus on transportation to improve mobility, safety, and connectivity in Hays County.”

The virtual events run from Monday, March 22 to Friday, April 9 . The online Open Houses will allow area residents to be involved in sharing input on existing road conditions, travel needs, and proposed improvements where identified. The public can visit the project website links for open house videos and comment opportunities. Comments may be submitted through online comment forms, email, mail, or voicemail through the April 9 deadline.

Additionally, the project teams have set aside Wednesday, March 31 , for individual phone or web appointments .
